Just ahead of the new season, AC Milan have received a major boost with regard to the future of Robinho, as the forward has agreed to a new contract with the club.
The Brazil international has been linked with a move away from the club for the last few weeks. He had only 12 months left on his contract, which only signalled a departure from the San Siro. His former club Santos have been heavily linked with the striker. They are looking to replace Neymar, who has been sold to Barcelona for £ 48 million. However, Santos have been unable to agree fee with Milan for the transfer of Robinho.
This has paved the way for the striker signing a new contract that will keep him until 2016. After announcing the signing on the official website of the club, vice president Adriano Galliani has stated that this is a great news for the club. This feels like a new signing for the club according to him. Milan have been suffering from a lot of financial problems in the last few years. It has forced them into selling a number of stars including Kaka. However, they have been able to retain Robinho because the player agreed to take a wage cut according to Gallaini.
“He is a great champion, he has lowered his wages. He left Santos and has had a great career. He didn’t want to leave Milan, he only wanted to return to Santos. He said no to all the Brazilian clubs, he only wanted Santos and so that gave birth to a new three-year contract,” said Gallaini. After finishing in the top three last season, Milan will be expected to put up a title challenge. It has been a few years since the club last won the Italian league title.
